Understanding Time-Based Proration for License Upgrades
When you buy any product from GravityKit, you can upgrade your license anytime. What you pay depends on how long you have held the license you are upgrading from. For the first 90 days, you pay the full difference between the two licenses. After that, the price is prorated based on how long you have left on your current license, so the closer you get to your renewal date, the less the upgrade costs.
In other words, you will pay the difference in cost between the two licenses as a prorated amount based on the time you have left on the current license.
Prorated pricing example
Let’s say you have a GravityView Single Site license which costs $119/year, and you want to upgrade to the All Access Pass Single Site ($396/year), but you still have 219 days left on your current billing cycle (you’ve had your current license for 146 days). When upgrading, you will pay the price difference multiplied by the remaining time in the license. Here’s math illustrating this example:
- $396 - $119 = $277
The price difference is $277 - 1 - ( 146 / 365 ) = 0.6
146 days (40%) of the current billing period have been used; 60% of the billing period remains - $277 * 0.6 = $166.20
The cost of the prorated upgrade is the price difference multiplied by the remaining time in the billing period
Note: When the upgraded license renews, the renewal price is the total cost of the All Access Pass license ($396).
Upgrading to or from a lifetime license #
Lifetime licenses are prorated too, under the same 90-day rule as above. A lifetime license has no term to run down, so once you are past those first 90 days the credit is worked out differently depending on which side of the move the lifetime license sits on.
- Upgrading to a lifetime license costs the lifetime price minus the unused time on your current license. GravityView Pro Single Site is $199 a year and GravityView Pro Lifetime Single Site is $799, so with half the year still to run, roughly $99 of your current license is unused and the upgrade comes to about $700.
- Upgrading from a lifetime license credits the full price you paid, with no reduction for time, because the license never expires. GravityView Lifetime Single Site is $499 and the Lifetime All Access Pass is $1,999, so that upgrade is $1,500 whenever you decide to make it.
When you upgrade an annual license to a lifetime one, the annual subscription is cancelled as part of the upgrade, so you are never billed for both.
Upgrading does not change your renewal date #
When you upgrade, you will pay a fraction of the full license price. If your renewal date is one month in the future, you will pay 1/12 the normal cost. Your renewal date will be the same after upgrading: in this example, the license will renew at full price in a month.
