How GravityKit uses Potomatic

We’re integrating Potomatic into a shared build process used by our suite of Gravity Forms add-ons so that each of our plugins is fully translated, automatically, on release.

Before Potomatic, we would rely on volunteer translators. This resulted in incomplete translations that took months to be completed. We occasionally paid for professional translators, but a full translation set would have cost us $36,000.

Potomatic is incredibly cost-effective: We have 1,744 strings in GravityView, and it costs just $0.0293 per language. This translation process takes around 12 minutes to translate all 1,744 strings in GravityView (0.4 seconds per string).

The translations, if not perfect, are very good. Using Potomatic doesn’t preclude translators manually fixing issues: translators now can focus on editing vs. translating thousands of strings from scratch.

How we automatically upload translation files into our TranslationsPress

We use TranslationsPress (essentially, hosted GlotPress) to distribute our language packs. Unfortunately, they lack an API for uploading translations, so we were stuck with a problem: we had all these great automated translations, but no way to upload them!

Vlad, GravityKit’s Head of Development and creator of Potomatic, wrote a Playwright script that logs into TranslationsPress and navigates their UI as if we were manually using the site. Point, click, upload the newly-created files! ✅ Was using Playwright a hack? Absolutely. It is a beautiful hack, worthy of praise!
